How to Change the Wheels of a Car or Trailer

Changing the wheels of a car is something that all drivers will face at least once in their lives. Whether due to wear over time or because of a flat tire on the road, knowing how to change a wheel is essential.

The first time you encounter this problem, it may seem complicated and you might end up frustrated. Therefore, below we explain everything you need to know to change your car's wheels safely.

What Tools Do You Need to Change Your Cars Wheels

Before you head out on a trip with your car, it's important to ensure you have all the necessary materials to change the tire. Most cars come equipped with these tools, but we advise checking to avoid any issues. The main tools you need to change the wheels of your car or trailer are:

Spare Wheel

You'll typically find it in the trunk. It's designed to get you to the nearest workshop, so it should not be used to cover a distance greater than 100 km or travel faster than 80 km/h.

Jack

This tool allows you to lift the car so that you can change the tire easily. A hydraulic jack has enough power to maneuver during the wheel replacement.

Socket Wrench

The socket wrench allows you to loosen and remove the screws attached to the rim and tire so you can take it off and secure it back onto the car.

Reflective Vest and Safety Triangles

These are not essential tools for changing a wheel, but it is necessary to wear them while you are changing it to remain visible to other drivers at all times.

How to Change the Wheel of a Car or Trailer

Now that we've explained the tools you need to change the car wheel, it's time to talk about the steps you should follow to make it as easy as possible.

Position the Car in an Appropriate Place

If you suffer a flat tire on the road or highway, move the car to the shoulder so as not to obstruct traffic. Additionally, we recommend placing it on the flattest ground possible to avoid any issues while you work.

Secure the Vehicle

Before leaving the car to change the wheel, make sure it is completely immobilized. Put on the handbrake and leave the gear shift in neutral.

Signaling

When you exit the vehicle, you must do so with the reflective vest so that all drivers can easily detect you. Additionally, you should place the triangles 15 meters in front of and behind your car to alert other vehicles of your presence.

Loosen the Screws

Once the vehicle is properly signaled, it’s time to change the wheel. The first step is to remove the hubcap if necessary. Then, loosen the screws with the socket wrench, simply place it and turn. Never remove the screws completely, as the tire could fall off.

Lift the Car

The next step is to use the jack to lift the car. It should be placed in a notch at the bottom of the vehicle. If you have trouble finding the exact point, you can check the car manual. Once the jack is in place, start to operate it slowly so that the car or trailer rises.

Remove the Screws and Wheel

After raising the car, you need to remove the screws from the wheel that you previously loosened. You can use either the socket wrench or your fingers. Once you’ve removed all the screws, store them in a safe place so you don’t lose them.

To remove the wheel, kick it with your foot to loosen it a bit, and then pull it off until it is completely removed.

Install the Spare Wheel

Once you have removed the flat wheel, you will need to install the spare. To do this, use the screws you just removed to secure it, but do not tighten them all the way yet.

Lower the Car

After placing and securing the wheel, you need to lower the car. To do this, turn the jack in the opposite direction until the tire contacts the ground. Finally, you just have to tighten the screws until it is completely secured.
