Trailer

This is the most common option. It is important to choose a trailer that is approved and equipped with visible lights and license plates. It should be suitable for the motorcycle’s weight and properly secured with straps and anchors at stable points, preventing movement. For long journeys, it is essential to check the straps multiple times. 

Van or Truck

This is the ideal option for long trips as it protects the motorcycle from the elements. For this type of transportation, it is important to have non-slip ramps and quality internal anchors. It is also important to ensure stability before starting the trip to prevent tipping. While driving, it is recommended to avoid sudden braking and check the load at every stop.

Professional Transport

This is the best option to avoid any complications. It is important to look for references and verify the insurance offered by the transport company against potential damage. Some companies provide real-time tracking for the client’s peace of mind.

Preparations and Necessary Equipment

Before starting any type of transportation, it is advisable to inspect the motorcycle's condition. Check the fuel level (keeping it low), confirm the oil level, and ensure the battery is securely attached to the frame. 

It is also important to gather all necessary documentation for transporting a motorcycle. Always have the registration certificate, the vehicle inspection (ITV), and valid insurance for both the motorcycle and the transporting vehicle, as well as the trailer if used. When using a professional service, keep the transport contract and payment receipt, and verify that the professional transport insurance covers all types of damages or losses. 

The necessary equipment for transportation depends on the type of transport chosen, but it is always essential to have high-strength straps to secure the motorcycle and prevent scratches, protectors for sensitive parts of the motorcycle against impacts, and non-slip ramps to facilitate loading and unloading.

Legal Aspects

When transporting motorcycles, it is essential to comply with regulations to ensure safety and avoid fines. If using a trailer, it must have its own license plate if it exceeds 750 kg of MMA  and have a valid ITV and insurance. It is also crucial to ensure proper functioning of indicators and reflectors.

The DGT establishes different speed limits for vehicles with trailers: 90 km/h on highways and expressways, 80 km/h on conventional roads, and 50 km/h in urban areas.

If the motorcycle extends more than 15% of the trailer, it must be marked with a V-20 panel.

For international transport, it is recommended to consult the regulations of each country to be crossed. If hiring a company for the transport, it is essential to verify that it complies with all current regulations.

Tips for Ensuring Safety and Common Mistakes

One of the most common and fatal mistakes is using low-quality tie-down straps, which increases the risk of them breaking during transport due to sudden movements. Additionally, overloading the trailer or transporting vehicle can create instability, making driving difficult.

Another common mistake is not checking the fastenings at each stop during the trip. Vehicle movement combined with road irregularities can loosen the straps, leaving the motorcycle exposed to falls.

This prevents them from loosening throughout the trip. Nonetheless, it is important to plan several stops to check the tension of the fastenings, avoiding any setbacks.
