What trailers can you use with a category B driving license?

When starting to drive with a trailer, all drivers have questions about the specific regulations for this accessory. The main questions revolve around the weight limit they can carry with their category B driving license, or whether a special driving permit is required to transport a certain load.
In this post, we’ll address questions about the limitations of the B license and also inform you about the different driving permits available for transporting heavier loads and how to obtain them.
What is the maximum trailer weight with a category B license
The B driving license allows driving with a load, but it is limited by its maximum authorized mass or MAM, meaning the maximum weight the vehicle can have when adding its unladen weight and its load.
With a B license, you can drive vehicles with a MAM of up to 3,500 kg and light trailers, like motorcycle trailers, with a MAM of 750 kg at most. Additionally, the total of both masses can never exceed 4,250 kg. In summary, if your vehicle weighs a maximum of 3,500 kg, you can add a 750 kg trailer, but no more, as this would exceed the Maximum Authorized Mass.
B-96 Driving Permit
Within the B driving license, there is an extension with the harmonized code B-96, which allows for heavier trailers with a MAM of more than 750 kg, as long as the total maximum mass does not exceed 4,250 kg. For example, if your vehicle weighs 2,900 kg, you can carry a trailer weighing up to 1,350 kg, as their combined weight is under 4,250 kg.
To obtain this B license supplement, no theoretical exam is required, but two practical tests must be passed to demonstrate sufficient skill.
The first test is performed on a closed circuit and includes two exercises. In the first, you must park in line and then exit the spot, which may be on a slope or flat. The second exercise involves attaching and detaching the trailer, then aligning the vehicle in a straight line. It’s important that the trailer is completely immobilized; otherwise, it will count as a fault. If these two tests are passed, you proceed to a city driving test to demonstrate sufficient skill to drive with a trailer.
What is the driving permit for the B+E license
The B+E license goes a step further, allowing the driver to operate vehicles and heavy trailers with a MAM over 4,250 kg, provided the mass of the trailer and the towing vehicle does not exceed 3,500 kg. To obtain this license for trailer driving, a series of tests similar to the previous one is required, but here a specific test on driving with heavy trailers is necessary. This test includes 20 questions, with a maximum of 2 errors allowed to pass.
The practical tests consist of two stages, one on a closed circuit and the other on public roads. In the closed circuit, three maneuvers must be performed: reversing in a curve and in a straight line, coupling and uncoupling the trailer, and finally, safe parking for loading and unloading.
