What is the maximum speed for a car with a trailer?
When driving a car with a trailer, we must be aware that it is a task requiring extra care as well as compliance with traffic regulations we may not be used to. In Spain, maximum speeds for such vehicles are regulated, meaning we need to know them to avoid fines and ensure road safety.
Maximum speed for cars with trailers
The speed of cars with trailers is determined by the type of road we are driving on. Below, we review the different cases we may encounter:
- Maximum speed in urban areas
In urban areas, the maximum speed allowed is 50 km/h, unless a sign indicates a lower speed limit for that road.
- Maximum speed on conventional roads
When driving on a conventional road, the maximum speed allowed is reduced to 80 km/h. However, we can increase the speed by 20 km/h when overtaking, just like a car without a trailer.
- Maximum speed on motorways and highways
On motorways or highways, the maximum speed is reduced to 90 km/h compared to 120 km/h for cars without trailers.
Additional considerations when driving a car with a trailer
Trailers are classified into two groups: light trailers, with a MMA (Maximum Authorized Mass) of less than 750 kg, and heavy trailers with an MMA of over 750 kg. Light trailers can be driven with the same license required for a car without a trailer, the B license.
For heavy trailers with an MMA over 750 kg, a special license called the B96 is required, allowing us to drive trailers up to 4,250 kg.
Heavy trailers require a secure coupling system installed by a workshop and legalized within 15 days after the vehicle inspection to avoid fines of up to €200. Light trailers also need to pass the inspection. Both must carry the appropriate license plate depending on the type of trailer.
